There are no adequate words to describe Yash Chopra. In short he was a Genre defining director, star-maker, a studio mogul and a filmmaker with a Midas Touch. He was a trail blazer who paved the way for the Indian Entertainment Industry.

He began his cinematic journey from the lush green fields of Punjab, that kept reappearing in his films in all their splendour.

Beginning his filmi career as an assistant to his brother,
BR Chopra, he went on to helm five exceptionally successful films for his brother’s banner – B. R. Films, each of which proved to be a significant milestone in his development as a world class blockbuster director to reckon with.
These were Dhool Ka Phool, Dharamputra, Waqt, India’s first true multi-starrer generational family drama, Ittefaq and Aadmi Aur Insaan. He has wielded the meghaphone for additional films made by other film companies – Joshila, Deewaar, Trishul and Parampara.

However, his greatest repertoire of work were the 50 plus films produced under the banner that he launched and which stands for the best of Hindi cinema – YRF – Yash Raj Films. He was a Distributor too.
He was one director who shared a passionate bond with Super Star Rajesh Khanna and directed him in Daag which also featured the do-eyed Sharmila Tagore. The film was a roaring hit and celebrated Platinum Jubilee. His DDLJ featuring Shah Rukh Khan whom he looked upon as his favourite and Kajol.

The pair proved lucky for him and they continued to his favourite. DDLJ is still being screened at the iconic Maratha Mandir a theatre which has proved extremely lucky for some directors to name one Prakash Mehra. His Zanjeer with non-star material proved a blockbuster when released at this theatre.

As a tribute to the greatest filmmaker Yash Chopra and his contribution to the Indian Film Industry, “The Romantics” on Netflix explores how Yash and Aditya Chopra successfully steered Bollywood towards love.The streaming of the films was on 14 February.

“The Romantics”, is the Oscar and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Smriti Mundhra’s creation of four-episode docuseries that offers a glimpse into the ethos and culture of the Indian film industry, colloquially known as Bollywood.
Spanning three years, from the research and writing phase to editing the interviews of 35 celebrity icons, Mundhra and her team have condensed over 50 years of cinematic history into four hour-long episodes.
