Throwback: Waheeda Rehman opted out of Karan Johar directorial “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” as Amitabh’s mother
Karan Johar’s directorial 2001 directorial “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” boasted of an impressive starcast. The promotion too emerged as the most talked about. The film featured Amitabh Bachchan Jaya Bachchan Kajol Kareena Kapoor Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan. Reportedly when the shoot for the film comnenced, Waheeda Rehman was also a part of the film. In a recent interaction with Arbaaz Khan in his chat show, Waheeda Rehman briefly mentioned of her comeback after a 10-year-break.She was much elated on Karan’s film by the atmosphere of the set.
As per YouTube video on Dharma Productions’ channel Karan shared that he approached Waheeda with his father, Yash Johar and said he has a role of a Daadi, as Amitabh’s mother. He needed extremely royal casting. So he asked Waheeda whether she will do it?’ Without questioning, she agreed. Thereafter Karan started to shoot with her and recalled that It was the aarti song ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’.
Then something unfortunate happened that was beyond her control and she had to opt out. Sadly her husband Kamaljeet passed away. Waheeda and Kamajeet got married in 1974 and were first introduced to each other by Karan’s father Yash Johar. Eventually her role was essayed by Achala Sachdev.
Interestingly Waheeda Rehman had played Amitabh Bachchan’s mother and his romantic interest on screen. She played his mother in Trishul, and his wife in Kabhi Kabhie.
