The Romantics, as part of celebration of the late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s legacy, was screened on 27 February, at Harvard. Interestingly, the docu-series figures in FTII’s Winter Film Appreciation course.

Ever since ‘The Romantics’ dropped online, the docu-series has grabbed the attention of a massive audience ranging from movie buffs to aspiring filmmakers on the late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s offerings.

Now, the docu-series director Smriti Mundhra had dual reason to celebrate. The Netflix documentary was screened for students at Harvard University on 27 February. Just not this, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) plans to include it in their Winter Film Appreciation course.

The four-part series that traces the late Yash Chopra’s journey brings a new cinematic language to Hindi films, and its influence on the country’s cultural landscape over the past 50 years. Amidst the film appreciation course, film students will watch, dissect and understand the filmmaker and his son Aditya Chopra’s brand of Hindi Cinema.

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker Smriti Mundhra affirms that it is of prime importance to explore the work of one of the most successful directors of our country.

Being a former film student of Harvard, she has studied the work of auteurs from all over the world. It always bothered her that her peers and she weren’t taught on the great filmmakers of Indian cinema. The Romantics is her attempt to throw light on the craft, journey, and global impact of Yash Chopra, and the generation of filmmakers and movie-goers whom he influenced.

Apart featuring an exclusive interview of the reclusive Aditya, ‘The Romantics’ sees many stars from the Hindi film industry that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Anushka Sharma, Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor coming together to pay tribute to the late filmmaker.

Smriti also opened up on getting Aditya Chopra to speak about nepotism in
‘The Romantics’.
