Looking Back: Rani Mukerji joined films as family needed financial help
Rani Mukerji has been in the entertainment industry for over 25 years now. She made her acting debut in 1996 with a Bengali film “Biyer Phool” and later made her Hindi debut with “Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat”.
The actor recently revealed to the media that it wasn’t her inclination to embrace acting while young.
Speaking to the media, she opened up that even while she came from family of filmmakers, her parents never really talked about business at home.

Notably, the actor staged a comeback with “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway”, after two years hiatus. In this film based on
real-life events, Rani essays the role of an Indian woman living in Norway, and whose young children are taken away from her as she is considered to be an unfit mother. When she was young, it was her mother who convinced her to become an actor.
Rani in the meantime explained that when she realised her family financial condition she took up to acting to earn and take care of her family.
When she grew up, an offer came her way. Her mother very politely put it to me that try it, if it doesn’t work for you, you can go back to studies. Maybe Rani didn’t realise at that time, the situation in her family was such that there was a dire need of financial help. But she didn’t think of this much as this. No child thinks their parents aren’t doing well.
She added, “The kind of lifestyle that her parents have her to her brother, it was quite comfortable. She feels glad that she did because she is really loves her profession as of today. When she was growing, she wanted to become a lawyer or an interior designer.
Rani’s father Ram Mukherjee directed films before she was born and was one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios. He directed films “Hum Hindustani” and Leader and also introduced Rani with Bengali film “Biyer Phool”also starring Prosenjit Chatterjee and Indrani Haldar.
The actor was last seen in “Bunty Aur Babli 2” with Saif Ali Khan, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh.
“Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway”also features Anirban Bhattacharya, Jim Sarbh and Neena Gupta.
