Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur opens up on India’s Oscar wins
Shekhar Kapur, the renowned filmmaker who has directed Oscar-winning Hollywood film Elizabeth, feels that SS Rajamouli after winning all the honours for his directorial RRR makes it known that we don’t need to wait for international validation in the form of awards.
Shekar is an acclaimed filmmaker who has directed Indian classics such as Masoom, Bandit Queen and
Mr India and has also made his presence felt internationally with the Oscar-nominated Elizabeth.
Notably, Shekhar Kapur’s directorial, “What’s Love Got To Do With it?,” hits the cinema halls releases this week in India which is precisely why he reacted to India lifting two Oscars this year which by all means becomes more important.
After Elizabeth which got nominated in seven categories at the Oscars, the filmmaker was waiting for other filmmakers to take it up, and thank God for that. It’s been years. One shouldn’t discount the fact that “All That Breathes” from India never won a nomination is as good as a win. It’s a beautiful film.
It is noteworthy that two heartfelt documentaries from India, and a feature film like RRR has taken the West by storm. It won Best Original song and moreover, it was a hardcore Indian, melodramatic celebration of what we do best.
He also went on to stress that it was imperative for the Oscars to give in to popular demand too. It just cannot remain art cinema, then it will fall by the wayside. Rajamouli won in other awards, over directors like Steven Spielberg. Internationally they have opened their arms,” adds the director, whose film What’s Love Got To Do With It? Featuring Emma Thompson and Shabana Azmi gears up
for a release in India.
Its a point to note that we wait for international validation even recognising our own talent back home. Oscars wake us up to the fact that we have such great content being made.
The maker of blockbuster “Bahubali” Rajamouli has proved that through such an indian way of making movies, and making it so celebratory that the whole of West is saying ‘look at this’.” RRR.
Validation often leaves you as an artist “trying to be who you are not claims Shekhar Kapur.
