The dawn of the year 2023 seems to be favourable for Women-oriented blockbusters. set to make waves in 2023:
In 2022, with the exception of highly successful ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ there were no other women-oriented films saw the light of day.
Now in 2023, with the emergence of women-oriented stories helmed by some of the most talented actors, there will definitely be a sea-change in the scenario.
‘Dhak Dhak’ has been making headlines ever since the shoot commenced in 2022, not for its stunning cast but for its unusual presence of four women bike riders undertaking the life-time journey from Delhi to the world’s highest motorable KhardungLa pass.
The road movie headlined by Dia Mirza, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ratna Pathak Shah and Sanjana Sanghi ensures to be an engrossing watch for many reasons, one of which happens to be Dia Mirza’s portrayal of a hijab-clad biker.The film is helmed by Tarun Dudeja and jointly produced by Taapsee Pannu, Pranjal Khandhdiya, and Aayush Maheshwari under the banners of Viacom18 Studios and Outsiders Films.
Prosit Roy directorial “Chakda ‘Xexpress’ is another sports biopic on its way in 2023 that sees Anushka Sharma’s comeback to the silver screen following a long hiatus as Jhulan Nishit Goswami, one of the greatest bowlers to ever play cricket. The film ensures to showcase how Jhulan moved up the ladder of success to accomplish her dream of playing cricket for India, amid the misogynistic politics and hindrances that came her way. The biopic also stars Renuka Shahane and Anshul Chauhan in prominent roles. It is produced by Karnesh Ssharma and Saurabh Malhotra.
Then it the Manish Kishore and Madhukar Verma’s joint directorial ‘Mrs Felani” which will see Swara Bhasker essaying nine different roles in an anthology of nine stories. As the tagline of the film suggests ‘Stories of suppressed dreams’ suggests, ‘Mrs. Felani’ portrays the struggles of small-town women to explore their dormant talents and break barriers to live life to the fullest. The film is produced by 3 Arrow Productions with a motive to appeal to the underserved female audience that rarely comes across stories it can relate to.
Thereafter it will be National Award-winner Mikhil Musale’s ‘Happy Teacher’s Day’, a social-thriller which she dedicates to teachers.
Nimrat Kaur and Radhika Madan head the cast in lead roles. The film is showcases some of the issues and challenges encountered by women teachers in society and the ideals they are supposed to live up to. It remains to be seen how the film with its unusual and relevant theme and talented cast will fare in the year amid theatrical release of some big blockbusters.
