NCP Chief Sharad Pawar forewarns Rahul Gandhi over ‘Savarkar remark’

With the VD Savarkar row intensifying, the NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who sees himself as the architect of the self-serving MVA alliance and also as a ‘sutradhar’ of Opposition unity, forewarned Rahul Gandhi that it isn’t right to criticise Vinayak Damodar Savarkar henceforth amid a meeting of opposition leaders at a dinner hosted by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday evening

Reportedly, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena had boycotted the meeting.

Pawar cautioned Rahul that he not to step on the fault line and criticise Savarkar who is a much revered figure in Maharashtra, as it will not be conducive for the MVA alliance in the state.

Pawar also emphasised that Savarkar was never a member of the RSS and reminded the Gandhi scion that the alliance’s real battle is with the BJP and PM Narendra Modi. It was, therefore, it is incorrect to refer to the Hindutva ideologue as ‘mafi veer’, an oblique reference to the ‘apology’ which Veer Savarkar supposedly tendered to extricate himself from the dreaded ‘Kaala Paani’ where the British had jailed him.

Congress Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge agreed with Pawar. Now that Pawar has ironed out the irritants, there is likelihood of MP Sanjay Raut is in catching up with Kharge in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Maha CM Eknath Shinde on Monday had also targeted Rahul for refusing to apologise. How can he hope to become a Savarkar. He doesn’t have the passion or the spirit of sacrifice. Rahul for a day should be put in the same jail (Kaala Pani) where the British jailed Veer Savarkar for as long as 11 years.
