This year the 68th Hyundai Filmfare Awards 2023 with Maharashtra Tourism will be held on April 27, 2023, at the Jio World Conventional Centre in Mumbai with the event promising a star-studded celebration of the best Hindi cinema has in 2022.

The Filmfare Best Director Award is one of the main awards presented to recognise directors working in Hindi cinema. It was in 1954 that the first awarded was inaugurated

As we await the upcoming Filmfare Awards, lets take a look at the directors with the most awards.

Bimal Roy has won the award 7 Times..Within a little over a decade, Bimal Roy established himself as one of the top Hindi film directors. His thought-provoking yet entertaining cinema didn”t rely on lavish production values. In his socially relevant autobiographical stories (Biraj Bahu, Devdas, Madhumati, Sujata, Bandini), he used his perceptive camera lens which seemed to pierce into the human condition as well as bring the subtextual context into sharp relief to depict regular people who were thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Bimal Roy was a relative newbie to the Bombay film business when he created Do Bigha Zamin. The production of the movie in Mumbai was exceptional. It described how a homeless man scraped by on the streets. No opulent scenery, dream sequences, middle-class moral lessons, or fairy-tale elements were present. Do Bigha Zamin went on to win best film and best director at the first Indian Filmfare Awards in 1954. He then went on to win Best Director for Parineeta, Biraj Bahu, Madhumati, Sujata, Parakh and Bandini. Bimal Roy has won all the times he has been nominated.

Yash Chopra has won the award 4 times..He directed 22 movies in his nearly 60-year career to emerge as a titan in the Indian cinema business. He made a significant contribution to Hindi film, and it is safe to say that love stories in particular will always owe him a debt of gratitude. With decades of effort, Yash Chopra defined generations of Indians what it means to be in love. To claim that he exclusively produced love stories would be to undervalue his contribution to Indian cinema. Through his Bollywood stories, he was arguably the best human relationship and dynamics researcher. Even in his romantic comedies, there was a realistic streak. Waqt focused on the division that resulted from Partition; Deewaar was a slice-of-life picture depicting a life of crime; Silsila and Lamhe dealt with extramarital relationships and May-December romance; and Darr illustrated the obsessional nature of love. Yash Chopra was honoured with the Filmfare award for Best Director and won it 4 times with films such as Waqt, Ittefaq, Daag and Deewar. He is also the director with the most number of nominations ever received. In addition to Best Director four times he also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has won the award 4 times. With his jaw-dropping sets, iconic blockbusters, historical dramas, and flicks that transport us to a fantastical universe, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the most in-demand directors among Bollywood actors as of today. Whether he is referred as the master of drama, romance, or epic movie locations, one can nearly always get caught up in the magic he conjures up on screen. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has revolutionised Indian cinema with his nine epic opuses, including Black, Saawariya, Padmaavat, Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Devdas. By igniting a movement that emphasises beautiful sets, crisp direction, thematic backgrounds, carefully choreographed scenes, and epic mega-musicals, he has transformed Indian cinema. He has won the Filmfare award for Best Director 4 times for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Black and Bajirao Mastani. Interestingly Black won a total of 11 awards at the ceremony, setting a record at the time for the most trophies for a single film which was only broken by Gully Boy years later.

Raj Kapoor has won the award 4 times. The showman of Hindi Cinema Raj Kapoor rose to prominence in Indian cinema amid the so-called ‘golden period’ in the first two decades following the country”s independence in 1947 as a director, producer, and actor. With one face turned towards the goals of the post-independence era and the other towards the current condition of star-driven Hindi film with its broad appeal and international audience, Kapoor resembles a Janus figure in certain ways.
It was when he was 24 years old that he founded RK Studios after working with numerous technicians. It was with this that he began his career as a storyteller. Although Raj Kapoor changed his style of filmmaking to suit the times, it was his work from the 1950s that made him a pioneer of Hindi cinema. Raj Kapoor was honoured with the Filmfare award 4 times with films such as Sangam, Mera Naam Joker, Prem Rog, and Ram Teri Ganga Maili.

This year, the Filmfare Awards ensures to be filled with entertainment and other fun filled endless moments.
