In a new development earlier this month, CM Shinde announced that Mumbai Coastal Road be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
The move is an attempt by the Shinde Fadnavis government to woo Maharashtrian voters ahead of the local body polls and next year’s assembly polls.
Over 10 years ago, the city’s first sea link the 5.6km Bandra Worli Sea Link was opened to motorists. The BWSL is named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The move is also seen as a bid to take on the Shiv Sena (UBT), as Uddhav Thackeray is part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with the Congress and NCP.
Political analysts said that the BVSL was going to be one of the city’s biggest landmarks and naming it after Savarkar would help the Sena woo Marathi voters.
As per Analysts the main railway station and airport are named after Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the coastal road being named after Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, naming the BVSL after Savarkar would also serve as a political statement for CM Shinde and show his commitment to the Marathi manoos.
