Kirti Kulhari defys the conventional trappings of fame
and in a media interaction affirms fame was never her target and the very reason why
she still exists in the entertainment industry even after ten years is she truly loves acting and loves being a part of incredible stories. Had acting been mere another thing, she wouldn’t have done it. It has helped her grow as a person with every character she has chosen and transformed her perspective, broken her conditioning, and made her question things around her.
She further threw light on her film journey which truly gratified her longing for good content, she doesn’t think she ever sat down and had a conscious discussion about consent before “Pink” regardless of being aware of it. None talked about it. Same with a show like “Four More Shots”, packaged as a fun, comedy series but talks on so many important things.
Merely doing the kind of roles she does has given her a voice, turned her into someone emerging more courageous and bold in terms of expressing what she felt. She can”t separate acting from her life anymore. It is so beautifully intertwined.
Although she started with ads and rose to become a well-known face in that spectrum rapidly, she wanted to explore. She started doing acting workshops, with one by Paatal Lok fame Neeraj Kabi, moving onto a theatre group Yatri Theatre and then one run by playwright Om Katare.
She further adds on how her focus has always been getting better at her skill of acting and that’s what has gotten her so far, she knew she wanted to act in films, so for two years, just learnt the craft as she was serious about acting. The purity of intentions that she had with her when she started out is what has brought her this far. She has never messed with that core and never got lost in the idea of fame or its trapping, to do something for the sake of it.
Was always only focused on bettering her skills as an actor, which is how she had come so far.
In 2016, Kulhari found her biggest success in ‘Pink’, which also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Andrea Tariang.
‘Pink’ transformed her to an overnight actor. Everyone took notice of her and the hard work that she had done silently over the years had paid off.
‘Pink’ instilled Kulhari the confidence to headline films, as she signed projects like the Madhur Bhandarkar-directed ‘Indu Sarkar’ and Irrfan Khan-starrer ‘Blackmail’. But both the films didn’t do well at the box office.
Kirti experienced a lull after these films didn’t do as well as they were expected to. She had to figure where she was heading. Then ‘Four More Shots’ came her way. She had apprehension, but was open. That changed the game for her.
The series, which chronicles the stories of four women, gave Kulhari a wide reach.
The show changed things for her and the film l released around ‘Uri’ and ‘Mission Mangal’, so my credibility as an actor just kept growing,” she added.
The actor has since featured in three series, Netflix’s ‘Bard of Blood’, and Hotstar Specials ‘Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors’ and ‘Human’.
Kirti is indebted to OTT for giving her the due and for giving her an opportunity to showcase what she can do as an actor she added.
Kulhari will be next seen in the dark comedy thriller movie ‘Nayeka’, which marks her debut as a producer.
