Mumbai to receive late monsoon – below normal rain likely till June 22

Unlike every year, this year Monsoon misses its onset date over Mumbai and Pune after its delayed entry into Kerala on June 8

The official onset date over Mumbai is June 11, and for Pune it is June 10.

Entire Maharashtra has an extended range prediction of below normal rainfall, except on and off thunderstorms till June 22.

The extended range forecast also indicates below normal rains till June 15 over the west coast, including south Konkan, and beyond that over parts of Maharashtra till June 22. Normally monsoon covers the state by June 15.

According to IMD on Friday, conditions were favourable for its further advance only into Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeastern states by Saturday.

Conditions are also becoming favourable for the advance of southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of the northeastern states and some parts of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in 48 hours, IMD said.

Mumbai on Friday witnessed strong winds accompanied by cloudy skies. IMD officials attributed these gusty conditions to Cyclone Biparjoy, which was moving west-southwest of Mumbai, as stated in their 6pm update.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Thane and Palghar on Sunday, indicating that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) may occur in one or two areas.

Mumbai, on the other hand, is expected to experience light rain or thundershowers, with a green alert issued for the mega city.

The officials clarify that the rainfall is also a result of Cyclone Biparjoy. IMD predicts
“Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy at 2.30pm Friday, about 740km west of Goa, 750km west south West of Mumbai, 760km south south west of Porbandar and 1,070km south of Karachi.

Meanwhile BMC is ready if cyclone Biporjoy hits Arabian Sea.
