Looking Back: When Dharmendra replaced Asha Parekh with Sharmila Tagore for Chupke Chupke
Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s directorial ‘Chupke Chupke’ was released in 1975. It featured the trio of Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan, earlier seen together in ‘Sholay’.
Intially, Asha Parekh was considered for the lead role but Dharmendra preferred Sharmila Tagore and eventually Asha Parekh was replaced by Sharmila Tagore.
Even as the actors in ‘Sholay’ displayed their star power in a varied style, ‘Chupke Chupke’ enthralled the audience with their comedic avatars.
Many may not be versed that ‘Chupke Chupke’ was a remake of the Bengali film ‘Chhadmveshi’, featuring Uttam Kumar and Madhavi Mukherjee. This comedy flick marked Dharmendra’s first foray into the genre and had a significant impact on both his and Amitabh’s careers.
Despite initial casting changes, the film’s timeless charm and humor continue to delight audiences and secure its place in Bollywood history.
