Viju Shah shares on film’s music

Viju Shah is son of Veteran Music composer Kalyanji ( of Kalyanji Anandji fame.

Viju Shah, has composed exceptional songs in films like Tridev Vishwatma Mohra Gupt Bade Miyan Chote Miyan etc over his journey.

Mohra featured Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon and Naseeruddin Shah and was helmed by Rajiv Rai, son of producer and distributor late
Gulshan Rai.

Amid his media interaction on 29 Years of Mohra, Viju Shah shares on the film’s music and its Shashi Kapoor and Dilip Kumar connection. He had told Rajiv Rai, that he will make the music album like buffet dinner. Whoever wants to relish the dinner will have it.

When quizzed he surprised many not able to recreate the sound you used in Mohra’s song, ‘Tip Tip Barsa Paani’….
Viju mentioned that It’s always difficult to recreate because he didn’t know what combinations he had done then. On the keyboard, sound has to be created on your own. There are no presets. Even at that point, a lot of musicians had asked him ‘Waisa hi sound chahiye’, he apprised them that he will try to come closer to it though he didn’t know if he could recreate it. It was a combination of 8-10 synth modules. Even if he gets the same sounds, the balance amidst them is what also counts. The song was recorded in Film Centre in one go. Uss time pe kya balance hua hoga, he didn’t know. He created this patch while he was dubbing for Anand-Milind on a film.

The singer was dubbing the song. We were supposed to record our song the next day and he was prepping for it and listening to his headphones and then locked the sound and made director Rajiv Rai hear it.

My style is an amalgamation of Indo-Western music. All my songs are composed in this style, be it Mohra, Tridev, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan etc. I knew the masses would love it. When you go to the interiors, this is what works. During the release of Mohra, my friend told me that he was at a tea stall located in a remote village in Ladakh. There, the stall owner played ‘Tu Cheez Badi Mast Mast’ continuously for 20 minutes! He called me and told me ‘Maine iss gaane ko aisi jagah pe suna hai ki kya batau. Iss gaane ko ab koi nahin rok sakta’.
