Meet Ronit Roy, Amitabh Bachchan of the small screen. Set foot to Mumbai, ‘Mecca’ of Bollywood with a mere Rs.6/ in his pocket. He put in a lot of struggle and as of today, he’s one of the top actors on television and a versatile star in films as well.
An actor may put in lot of struggle to get a big break, but it’s difficult to make a comeback on the silver screen, more so after facing consecutive failures. What Ronit went through following his debut film. He was desperare to find a mark on the small screen. But that was just the beginning.
Today, he’s looked upon as one of the top actors on television, and a versatile scene-stealer in films. That’s Ronit Roy for you.
Ronit Roy was born on October 11, 1965, in Nagpur, and is the eldest son of businessman, Brotin Bose Roy and Dolly Roy. After schooling in Ahmedabad, pursued in Hotel Management. As per reports, after completing his education he landed in Bombay, now Mumbai, with a mere Rs.6/ and amid his struggling time, fter completing his studies, Ronit came to Mumbai with only 6 rupees. In his initial struggling days, Ronit
stayed with Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai.
Subhash Ghai had old Ronit that it would be difficult for him to make a mark in Bollywood, but he pushed him to try his luck. To survive in the city, Ronit joined Hotel Sea Rock as a management trainee and worked as a bartender, washing dishes, and cleaning tables. He wasn’t enjoying his work, but decided to carry on to survive.
A year after he landed in Mumbai, he lost his father and determined to give up his job at Sea Rock and joined Subhash Ghai’s production house Mukta Arts, as an assistant director, and worked in Jackie Shroff’s debut movie Hero. Later, Ronit even started working as a freelancer editor and edited a few of Ghai’s films. Meanwhile, Ronit also started doing some modelling and advertising work.
It is a matter to ponder that even after a successful debut, Ronit Roy had no money for food.
In 1992, director Deepak Balraj offered the lead role in the love drama Jaan Tere Naam.
This was Ronit’s debut movie which turned out to be a Silver Jubilee hit at the box office.
After Jaan Tere Naam, Ronit starred in some other movies such as Army, and Hulchal, but none of them could replicate his debut movie’s success. Amid his low phase, he struggled to have food as well, as he didn’t have money for it.
Following his unsuccessful career in films, Ronit started his own security agency,
Ace Security and Protection which provided security to top celebrities Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Hrithik Roshan.
Three years after establishing his security agency, Ronit got a call from Balaji Telefilms for the series Kamaal. But before Kamaal, Ront was offered Rishabh Bajaj in Kasautii Zindagii Kay (KZK). Ronit grabbed the opportunity and his Mr Bajaj emerged as one of the most popular characters in the series and he became an household name. He was also hailed as Big B of the small screen.
It was no looking back for Ronit after KZK, and, he went on to act in other series such as
Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Bandini, and Adaalat.
Notedly, Ronit staged his comeback in movies with Udaan and went on to act in several films such as Shootout At Wadala, 2 States, Thugs of Hindostan, Sarkar 3, and Liger. He was last seen in Bloody Daddy.
Ronit married Joanna in 2003 and has a daughter, Ona. Later he married model Neelam Roy and had a daughter Aador and a son Agastya. Ronit also has a brother Rohit Bose Roy, who is also a well-known actor.
