Dharmendra was Bollywood’s most successful actor with many hits but wasn’t labelled as Super Star
The term superstar was first used for Rajesh Khanna, the only actor to have given 15 hits in a row. Later the Super Star tag was used for Shah Rukh Khan Salman Khan Aamir Khan Ranbir Kapoor Akshay Kumar etc etc in the history of Indian cinema. Whereas trailblazing
heroes like KL Saigal and Ashok Kumar were never called superstars. The parameter often extended beyond box office success. Seemingly this is precisely why the actor with most hits as lead star was never considered a superstar even though those with fewer hits got the tag.
However, Dharmendra, the actor with the most hit films in his career in Hindi cinema who saw his 74th box office hit recently in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, where he had a supporting role was never tagged as Super Star.
Reportedly, over 60 of his hits featured the actor in lead roles.
Dharmendra’s success is his prolificity. He has acted in close to 240 films in his career, which allowed him to have as many hits. No other Bollywood hero comes anywhere close to him.
He had a stellar record at the box-office.
Dharmendra forayed into the acting arena in the early-1960s and in a few years established himself as an actor to reckon with. But he was limited to supporting roles in big films for the first few years. It wasn’t until the turn of the decade that he emerged a force at the box office. Some of Dharmendra’s biggest hits include Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Dharam Veer, Phool Aur Patthar, and Yamla Pagla Deewana.
The actor has been part of several multi-starrer and ensemble films too, which have contributed to his hit count.
