The cartoon displays Waheeda posing with President Draupadi Murmu and holding the award with a million-dollar smile on her face. The picture bears the caption ‘Aaj Jeetne Ki Tamannah Hai’, which is a paraphrase of her iconic ‘Guide’ song. The word ‘jeetne’ means victory in Urdu.
Waheeda Rehman over an interview with Doordarshan National, admitted she got extremely emotional at being conferred the prestigious award which wasn’t expected. She revealed she was shocked when Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur called her up to break the news to her, as she had been inactive for over a decade.
She added in the midst of the interview that she had never thought about receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and never dreamt about it. She has received an award after a very long time and thought all the awards that she had to receive she had already received.
She was honoured with Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan.
She recalled that When Anurag Thakur ji told her (about winning the Dadasaheb Phalke Award), she couldn’t say anything for some time. She thought, how did this come to her?)’ Then she told him that she hadn’t worked in the last 10-12 years. But said, that this is not about her present work. But about the work she has done in her lifetime.
