CJI DY Chandrachud opens up on importance of discussion in fortifying democratic principles
DY Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India on Saturday, 2 December asserted that in a democracy, the majority “will have its way”, emphasising that the minority “must have its say.”
In the midst of speaking at Justice Keshav Chandra Dhulia Memorial Essay Competition, on the topic of “Democracy, Debate and Dissent”, the CJI said that for all citizens to feel free in a democracy, the State must side with the weaker population, which may be a numerical or a social minority.
This may at first appear to be at odds with the democratic principle of majority rule.
