Rhea Chakraborty seeks CBI’s temporary suspension of lookout circular, citing professional commitments necessitating her for overseas travel
In a new twist to actor Sushant Singh death case the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday brought it to the notice of the Bombay High Court that it is actively making verifications as to whether Rhea Chakraborty is as of now associated with a company, deciding her eligibility for overseas travel for its event.
Rhea had submitted a petition challenging the lookout circular issued against her by the CBI in connection with the ongoing investigation into the untimely demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
In her plea, she sought a temporary suspension of the lookout circular, citing professional commitments that necessitated her travel to Dubai from December 27 to January 2 claiming to be the brand ambassador of a pet food company, and emphasizing her obligation to attend the company’s event.
In accordance to a media report,CBI, represented by advocate Shreeram Shirsat, apprised a division bench of Justices A S Gadkari and SC Chandak that the agency is in the process of verifying Chakraborty’s claims in regard to her association with the company. Shirsat revealed that, as per information received by the CBI, Chakraborty is longer the brand ambassador for the pet food brand and that instead, Kiara Advani is now reportedly the face of the brand.
Shirsat requested for additional time to confirm this information.
Chakraborty’s counsel, Abhinav Chandrachud, urged the court to schedule the next hearing for Friday (December 22).
However, the bench emphasized that it would not rush the proceedings and acknowledged the CBI’s need for time to verify the information. The court suggested that Chakraborty could approach the vacation bench on December 26 if necessary.
Actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead on June 14, 2020. Initially investigated by the Mumbai police, the case was registered as an ‘accidental death’. However, things took a twist when Rajput’s father lodged a complaint with the Bihar police, accusing Rhea and her family of abetting the actor’s suicide. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the CBI, which has been probing the circumstances surrounding Rajput’s demise.
The lookout circular against Chakraborty, along with her brother Showik Chakraborty, was issued in August 2020. Earlier this year, the high court temporarily suspended the circular against Showik, allowing him to travel abroad.
Both Rhea and Showik were arrested in 2020 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a drugs case related to Rajput. They were subsequently granted bail.
