Mumbaikars wake up to pleasant nip in air as mercury dips to 16.7 degrees Celsius
Mumbaikars on Sunday morning woke up to a pleasant nip in the air as mercury levels dipped to 16.7 degrees Celsius, the lowest for February in the season.
Attributing the dip to the influx of northerly winds, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the minimum temperatures will continue to hover between 17 and 18 degrees Celsius for the next three days at least.
Whereas IMD’s Santacruz observatory, on Sunday, registered a minimum temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal, the Colaba coastal observatory, meanwhile, recorded 18.8 degree Celsius.
According to Mumbai IMD Director, Sunil Kamble, currently, strong northerly winds have made Mumbai cooler.
There are no western disturbances (WD) as at present owing to which strong northerlies are gushing in. However, IMD expects another WD around February 15, and temperatures can rise following that.
Kamble adds that for the next 2-3 days, minimum temperatures will remain between 17 and 18 degrees Celsius.”
Even so, on Sunday, the maximum temperature continued to oscillate between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius in the suburbs, as well as in the island city division on Sunday.
As per IMD Mumbai data, the lowest ever February temperature in the past 10 years was recorded in 2019 when minimum temperatures at Santacruz dipped to 11 degree Celsius.
IMD director further adds that several districts are likely to receive rains over next 3 to 4 days, with IMD having sounded yellow alert for Sunday and Monday for certain districts in Vidarbha. But, Mumbai is unlikely to receive any rain.
