Legendary Ghazal Singer on Monday, 26 February bid adieu to the ‘mortal’ world to enter the ‘immortal’ world.

His passing away has made the World of Music and Bollywood ‘Udhas’. No doubt he has been ailing for quite sometime, but his end was not expected so soon even though he was 72.

The news of his passing away was confirmed by his daughter Nayaab Udhas who took to social media to share a statement. It read as,
“With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th february 2024 due to a prolonged illness”.

Notably, the Legendary Ghazal singer shot to fame as one of the renowned ghazal singers of the country. He was exceptionally famous for his unique renditions which weren’t mere soulful but even were able to connect deeply with the audiences – thanks to their meaningful lyrics.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he rose to emerge prominent that the movies that had his songs became popular solely for its music. Songs like ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’, ‘Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein’, ‘Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera’, and ‘Na Kajre Ki Dhar’ were some of his most popular songs. These songs are so favoured that they’ve not aged at all. Even today’s generation can be heard listening to these songs quite often.

Pankaj Udhas was honoured with highest civilian award the Padmashri in 2006. His accomplishment in the field of art, entertainment and music were unparalleled. He shall be sorely missed by people from all generations.

Ghazals were his forte, but as a 90s film buff, Jeeye Toh Jeeye Kaise, Kisi Ne Bhi Toh Na Dekha, Mat Kar Itna Guroor, Khuda Kare Ke Mohabbat Mein, Dil Deta Hai Ro Ro Duhai, Main Deewana Hoon, Na Kajre Ki Dhar, Mohabbat Inayat, Dil Jab Se Toot Gaya stood out.

And not to forget Humne Khamoshi Se, Main Dil Ki Dil Mein Rakhta Hoon, Aankh Mere Yaar Ki Dukhe.
Dekh ke tumko kya hota hai”
If you’ve heard these 90s Hindi film tunes.

RIP Pankaj Udhas.
