Richa Chadha emulates Meena Kumari’s character in Pakeeza for her role in Heeramandi

Tragedy Queen of Hindi Cinema Meena Kumari has been an inspiration for many of the present crop of actresses.

Ahead of the streaming of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” on the OTT Giant Netflix on May 1, Richa Chadha over an interview revealed that she emulates Meena Kumari’s character in Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeeza for her role in “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar”.

“Heeramandi” based on courtesans and their stories, is set in pre-independence Lahore and Richa Chadha essays the character of Lajjo and prepared for the role by studying Meena Kumari’s character of Shahibjaan in Pakeezah. She studied the character, her seductive voice, drew parallels, and watched her interviews for inspiration.

Notably, Meena Kumari’s seductive voice and charismatic screen presence captured millions of hearts – from passion, romance, love, success to tragedy, she witnessed all of these in her real life too. Her work even today is challenging the Bollywood screen.

Richa also articulated that she
felt like she was walking in the footsteps of a cinematic legend, and it was an honour to pay tribute to Meena Kumari through through her portrayal of Lajjo.

Heeramandi, besides Richa Chadha also features Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao, Hydari and Manisha Koirala among others.
