Veteran actress Farida Jalal turns grandmother
It goes without saying that Hindi Cinema’s veteran actress Farida has emoted innumerable characters both mainstream and parallel films. However, she got typecast first phase of her when she played the role of Dilip Kumar`s sister in ‘Gopi’
It’s atypical for actors to mushroom on screen, but Farida Jalal is one such actor who has essayed an varied characters as hero’s sister, a mother, and now a grandmother.
Even as Hollywood has Leonardo DiCaprio, who embarked on his career at the age of 17, India had Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Farida Jalal.
Notedly all of her careers are textbooks in cinematic longevity.
Farida embarked on her journey at 17 with film ‘Taqdeer’. Tarachand Barjatya, grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya offered her a role opposite Rajesh Khanna.
She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she won.
Earlier in an interview, she had revealed that she jumped at the chance of essaying Dilip Kumar’s sister in the film because she simply loved the actor. Thereafter she was flooded with roles of the hero’s sister and she essayed it with Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Manoj Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amitabh Bachchan.
In the 1990’s the actress made a transformation and ventured into portraying motherly roles and went on to play mother to Kajol in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ followed by Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, Bichhoo’ – the Indian ripoff of Leon: The Professional’ in which she played mother to Jeeva’s mother and many others.
She has not only done films but also television serials.
She was privileged to be a part of Indian sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh’, and the drama show Balika Vadhu’.
Her latest work, is in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial
OTT debut Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’, in which she essays the role of Qudsia Begum, the grandmother to Taha Shah Badussha’s character of Tajdar, Nawab.l
Her 57 years career is truly a testimony to her resplendence
and her proficiency to emerge one with the character.
