Disney Star’s Gaurav Banerjee replaces NP Singh as CEO Sony Pictures Networks India

In a new development Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has engaged Disney + Hotstar’s Gaurav Banerjee as its new CEO. Gaurav replaces NP Singh who had last week expressed his intent to bow out after 25 years at Sony.

Gaurav at Disney+ Hotstar,
oversaw content for Hindi entertainment and worked as Business Head for Star Bharat, as well as Hindi and English movies, kids & infotainment, and regional (east) channels. He wasn’t immediately available for comment.

A former journalist, Gaurav embarked on his career with Aaj Tak prior to associating with Star News as a prime-time anchor and senior producer in 2004.

It was in 2005, that he was instrumental in launching the Bengali news channel Star Ananda.

In 2008 he moved to Star India to lead content strategy for the network’s regional entertainment channels, helping the company expand into new markets with the launch of Star Jalsha in Bengal and Star Pravah in Maharashtra.

He was positioned as Head of content strategy for Star Plus in 2009, and played an important role in revitalising the channel with hit shows such as
Diya Aur Baati Hum and Sasural Genda Phool, which facilitated the channel to regain its leadership position in 2010.

He was promoted to general manager of Star Plus in 2013 and in 2015, took on leadership of the Content Studio.

Gaurav is armed with a master’s degree in filmmaking and TV production from the Mass Communications Research Centre at Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi. He wrapped up his under-graduation in History at Delhi’s St Stephens College.
