Indisputably, Imtiaz Ali currently is credited as one of India’s finest directors. A peek into his five movies where instead of painting a rosy picture of relationships, he exposed to the not-so-good side of it.

Although his movies made us fall in love, Imtiaz Ali with his nuanced film-making, showed us how complicated relationships can be. Also, for the ones with a wanderlust, his movies are visual treat as well.

*Jab We Met
It was after a long time, that an Indian director put the responsibility of an onscreen bond on the actress and made us fall in love with Kareena Kapoor Khan’s portraiture
of ‘Geet’ and after a really, pretty long time, the good boy wins the girl in the end. Shahid Kapoor as Aditya Kashyap, a rich yet kind-hearted boy, but his role was peripheral to Kareena’s.

*Highway
This film belonged to Alia Bhatt and it was one of the best of her performances, even as we also got to see the lovely backdrop of the mountains and picturesque North India.

Imtiaz Ali, dared to show a girl being sexually abused by a family member, thereby breaking the stereotype of ‘Indian sanskari’ families. Randeep Hooda’s character of ‘Mahabir Bhati’ again was
peripheral to Alia Bhatt’s Veera.

*Rockstar
This film saw Ranbir Kapoor at his best till date. Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri were exhibited in a complicated bond which most of us can relate to. Though a bit dark, this film also taught about battling for our dreams and fighting societal norms.

*Tamasha
Officially this film was Imtiaz Ali’s finest work to date. We got to see Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone try to discover themselves even as struggling to make a relationship work. Another scenario that most of millenials face these days and one we can relate to. Plus the scenes which were shot in Corsica, France gave some travel goals.

*Love Aaj Kal
This movie perhaps embodies complicated relationships in the best way possible. Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Imtiaz Ali has beautifully captured the changing dynamics of relationships of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone and showed how ‘falling in love’ has transformed over the years.
