Ektaa Kapoor ‘fires” Hansal Mehta from daily soap after 15 days
Ekta Kapoor, reportedly has fired renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta from daily soap after mere 15 days. As per Ektaa, the soap was looking too much like a film.
Hansal Mehta recalled signing on to direct a daily soap for Ekta Kapoor because of financial constraints,
In an interview Hansal Mehta opened up on the many ups and downs in his career, which eventually pushed him into roles as diverse as a wedding videographer, food show creator, and Bollywood big-shot.
Amidst the interview he also articulated that he switched to television to make ends meet during a particularly difficult phase. Then went on to add that ut said that he was fired from the project by Balaji Telefilms chief Ekta Kapoor. Years later, Ekta launched his streaming career with the show Bose: Dead or Alive.
Speaking with the media team Hansal mentioned that filmmaker Sanjay Gupta ‘saved’ his life by giving him the opportunity to direct the film Woodstock Villa, a launch vehicle for Kirron Kher’s son Sikandar. He owed a debt of gratitude to Sanjay for giving him ‘a job and a steady income’, because he had ‘reached a point where it was a matter for survival. He said, he tried to do an Ekta Kapoor show, K Street Pali Hill. It was a daily soap, but he went in to direct he was fired by Ektaa Kapoor in just 15 days since she felt it wasn’t looking like a soap but a film. This unpleasant thing has just not happened to Hansal Mehta but even to other directors and actors. Ektaa is a moody person anything can happen to anybody associated with her.
Hansal further went on to explain that contrary to popular belief about Ekta, she was very polite. “Ekta told him ‘Sir, it’s too much like a film’ and this was in the year 2005 when he was layed-off very politely. Unlike what people have heard… Very politely she called him and said, ‘Sir, their shows don’t work because of this since they have a format, and they abide by that. we follow that and she no no longer need him.
Hansal then did a show for a different channel, a gangster drama in which ‘Dara Singh played Don Corleone’. Years later, however, it was Ekta who launched his career in the streaming industry with the AltBalaji show Bose: Dead or Alive. He said, “Funnily enough, she has to be credited for his entry in long-form. He was showrunnner on Bose: Dead or Alive. It was a prestige show featuring Rajkummar…” Hansal went on to gain further prominence with the blockbuster SonyLIV series Scam 1993: The Harshad Mehta Story, and Netflix’s Scoop. He is now directing a show about Mahatma Gandhi, and will return to direct the third season of Scam.
