Ujjwal Nikam backtracks as special public prosecutor of BJP govt in Maharashtra
After losing to Congress’s Varsha Gaikwad in LS polls, eminent Lawyer Ujwal Nikam
backtracks as special public prosecutor of BJP govt in Maharashtra.
Reportedly, Maharashtra government has re-appointed him and he resumes all the cases, he had to leave when he tried his luck in the Lok Sabha elections.
Notedly, Nikam was the BJP’s candidate from Mumbai North Central, but lost to Varsha Gaikwad of the Congress party by 16,000-plus votes.
According to Congress state President Nana Patole while speaking to the media, the Congress party objects to his reinstatement, saying that the BJP was setting a “wrong precedent”. “Ujjwal Nikam fought the Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate. They strongly object to this appointment.
In his short venture into electoral politics, Nikam attempted to campaign on the plank of nationalism with the BJP also roping him in, given that, he was the special public prosecutor representing the Maharashtra government in the trial of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case.
Ujwal Nikam had famously concocted story that terrorist Ajmal Kasab’s last meal was biryani.
