Akshay Kumar recalls he learned to accept failure from father-in-law Rajesh Khanna’s career debacle

Akshay Kumar says he learned about failure from father-in-law Rajesh Khanna’s career downfall: ‘After biggest success, he saw a complete drop’

Akshay Kumar, late superstar Rajesh Khanna’s son-in-law recounted his idea of failure and success, and saying that the career debacle of his late father-in-law Rajesh Khanna taught him a lot.

Elaborating on his bond to success he said that he has experienced enough failure in life to understand that everything is temporary. Amidst the interview, he also said that he learned a lot about falling down from his father-in-law, the late superstar Rajesh Khanna, whose career witnessed a drastic decline after an initial period of great success. Akshay said that hard work is only one component of accomplishment, and that a lot depends also on luck.

When asked what he thinks about failure and success, he said, he doesn’t let anything enter his head. He has seen a lot of people fall down and has heard many stories. His father-in-law has taught him so much, because he had seen the biggest success in life and then he saw a complete drop. What he (Akshay) does is that he takes knowledge from other people, and realises that these things are just to be kept at a one-hand’s distance and his job is to just keep working.

Akshay Kumar also revealed that he wants to buy the apartment he lived in before becoming a star, visits it every month at the crack of dawn

Explaining what he means by the nature of success and failure, Akshay said, in his career, he has given 16-18 hits continuously, thereafter 10-12 flops, but he doesn’t take it seriously. He has known this since the beginning of his career. It is not yours. It is a crown that will be passed on to others. Today, it’s with you, next Friday it’ll be with somebody else. Success is an amazing thing, but don’t take it seriously; it’ll run.

Many years ago, Akshay’s mother-in-law, actor Dimple Kapadia, had also spoken about living with Rajesh Khanna amidst his declining period and it was his first encounter in life with failure. This was in 1985. She further added that when a successful man goes to pieces, his frustration engulfs the entire surroundings. It was a pathetic sight when Kaka waited at the end of the week for collection figures but the people didn’t have the guts to come and tell him.

Akshay said that he doesn’t believe success depends only on hard work but truly believes this. Success is 70% luck and 30% hard work. He has seen worst films becoming superhits, and best films becoming flops…

That means there is something called luck, and it plays its own game.” Akshay has had a very difficult post-pandemic period, with only one hit to his name among around 10 releases.

His last film, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, turned out to be one of his biggest bombs, grossing only around Rs 100 crore against a budget of over Rs 350 crore.
