The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai and the neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Maha CM Chief Eknath Shinde stated that preparations are in place for potential airlifting operations and urged residents to cooperate with authorities and move to safer locations. He also appealed to Mumbaikars not to venture outside, if not required.
Due to the heavy rains accompanied by high winds Vihar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai, started to overflow this morning (Thursday 25 July).
While Office-goers riding the Mumbai Metro were not impacted by the heavy downpour, local train commuters were unable to reach their work place in time due to slow running of the locals. Even those commuting by the BEST buses too couldn’t reach their work place in time due to waterlogging.
