Indisputably, Parveen Babi was endowed with beauty, unconventional style, and bold choices.

As one of the most iconic actresses of her time, she broke the mold of the traditional Bollywood heroine, bringing a blend of glamour, sophistication, and independence to the silver screen revolutionary for the era. Her life and career, however, were as enigmatic and complex as the characters she portrayed.

The Junagadh born Parveen Babi made her film debut in 1973 with the film Charitra.
But, it was her performance in Majboor, that brought her into the limelight. Her unique screen presence and modern personality quickly made her one of the most sought-after actresses in Bollywood.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Parveen Babi was at the peak of her career, featuring in blockbuster films like Deewaar Amar Akbar Anthony, Shaan and Namak Halaal. Notwithstanding her success, Parveen Babi’s life was etched by a deep sense of mystery and turmoil. In the early 1980s, at the height of her career, she suddenly disappeared from the public eye, leaving behind a trail of rumors and speculation.

She later returned, only to reveal that she had been struggling with mental health issues, including a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.

Her later years were marked by a reclusive lifestyle, away from the glitz and glamour of the film industry. Parveen Babi’s tragic end came on January 20, 2005, when she was found dead in her Mumbai apartment. Her death was as mysterious as her life, with many unanswered questions and speculations surrounding it.

Parveen Babi’s impact on Indian cinema and popular culture is undeniable. She redefined the role of women in Bollywood, paving the way for future generations of actresses to take on more diverse and empowered roles.
