It is learned that news agency has sued Netflix and the makers of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack and urged for the removal of four episodes for using their content.

Anubhav Sinha’s series IC 814 is headlining for all the wrong issues. The Kandahar Hijack, featuring Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, and Naseeruddin Shah, is embroiled in legal hassles as agency ANI has sued Netflix and the show’s creators for use of their content in four episodes without permission. They have also demanded the removal of these episodes.

As per a report by Bar and Bench, the news agency has sued the OTT giant Netflix and makers of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack for allegedly infringing copyright and trademark. As per the news agency, the show uses its footages showing former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, General Parvez Musharraf and terrorist Masood Azhar without valid licence.

Reportedly, the Delhi High Court has Slapped a legal notice to Netflix and the show’s other producers. The matter comes up for hearing on Friday.

Sidhant Kumar, counsel for the news agency revealed that Netflix have used copyright archival footage of the news agency sans licence, and they have also used the their trademark. Since the series has come into such criticism, their
(News agency) trademark and brandname are being tarnished.

Meanwhile, earlier, the series had sparked a major controversy over the ‘Hindu’ codenames of the hijackers. The series, based on the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814, uses Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’ in the show. Several users claim that the real identities of the terrorists has been misrepresented.

The real names of the hijackers were Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny, Ahmad Qazi, Zahoor Mistry and Shakir. However, the series referred to the code names used by terrorists: Bhola, Shankar, Doctor, Burger and Chief.

According to Netflix, they have added the real names of the terrorists with the disclaimer.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack also features Pankaj Kapur, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, and Patralekhaa, among others.
