Mumbai monsoon likely withdrawl only next week.
In the midst of the Mumbai City receiving continuous showers over the past days, Mumbai’s Santacruz station recorded 68.4 mm rain in October alone while the Colaba station registered 63 mm rain.
Following an early onset of monsoon this season, the ongoing spells of showers
which has caught residents off guard since Wednesday, have now deferred the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from Mumbai this year.
While the typical date of monsoon withdrawal in the city is October 10, senior scientists have attributed the current delay to a system brewing in the Arabian Sea, adding that rain in the city is likely to cease entirely by next week.
Over the past three days, the city has been witnessing moderate to heavy rains, particularly during the night time. While several pockets had recorded over 60 mm rain within a period of one hour on Thursday night, data showed that moderate showers continued to lash the city thereafter with IMD’s Santacruz station registering 31.4 mm rain between Friday and Saturday morning. Meteorologists have attributed the resurgence of downpour to the development of a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea.
While the system ushered in relief by bringing down the alarming AQI levels and high temperatures, it has also delayed the withdrawal of monsoon in the bay this year.
According to Sunil Kamble, director, IMD Mumbai, Whenever there is a system that brings in rain, withdrawals are delayed. This is not unusual. In fact, we have also had years where monsoon withdrawal has been delayed up to October 20.”
Kamble added that light to moderate showers are slated to continue over the next 2 – 3 days at least. With the intensity of showers due to recede thereafter, Mumbai is likely to witness withdrawal of monsoon next week.
As of now, the withdrawal line has reached Nandurbar district. Over the next 2 – 3 days, as the intensity reduces, we will observe the situation and then declare the withdrawal. Currently, conditions for withdrawal from Mumbai are conducive in the upcoming week.
Last year, the withdrawal of southwest monsoon in Mumbai had been declared on October 7 while in 2022, it was announced on 23 October.
