Chunky Panday made his debut in films in 1987, and it was an instant success and . a fantastic year for him, beginning with Pahlaj Nihalani’s Aag Hi Aag, followed by several other hit films. But it all started to “wither” when other actors entered the scene. Chunky Panday says he was “lost” when stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Govinda and Ajay Devgn made their debuts.
In an interview Chunky traced his early days, that he has been through his fair share of rejections, which included several failed TV and film auditions.
He went on to add he remembers going to the office of a very famous producer-director, who makes romantic films.
He was going there after his workout. He saw him and said, ‘he is not making Tarzan, you can go to B Subhash’s office.’
The actor, currently awaiting the release of the Netflix film Vijay 69,featuring Anupam Kher, reflected on his early career boom and the eventual dip. By the mid-90s, all the stars were slotted in different categories– while Ajay, Akshay Kumar and Sunny Deol were headlining action films, Shah Rukh Khan was the new romantic star, and Aamir was featuring
in humble dramas. Salman Khan, on the other hand, had found a blockbuster collaborator in Sooraj Barjatya.
On asking him on making a space in 1990s that he lost,” Chunky went on to reveal that he came when the galaxy was exploding– 1986 was Govinda, fame in 87, the following year was Aamir, Salman came in 1989 and Ajay was in 1990. So, they just kept coming. He did get lost, and he enjoyed his honeymoon for exactly a year. That enrire year of 1988 was fantastic for him and then, everything just faded out.
Adding, too many people came in” at the time, but there was “no one to blame but myself”, for how his career panned out. He added, he was that young blood who always wanted to keep working and was taking on any kind of work, trying to make money. Then, you can’t chart your career very well because your priorities become very different.
“But then again, there is also a lot of luck involved. If he had to re-live his life, he will still go through the same process because he has also enjoyed his ups and downs. He added downs are also great. Nobody is watching you; you are not being judged when you are down– you can do anything,
Chunky got a new lease of life in 2010 when featured in the comedy role of Aakhri Pasta in Housefull. The actor is currently filming for the fifth instalment of the franchise, reprising his role.
