Subhash Ghai opens up on convincing Legends Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar In Saudagar
Legendary filmmaker Subhash Ghai recalled how revitalised the bond amid two of Hindi Cinema’s greatest legends, Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar, after 30 years.
The Hindi Cinema’s legendary filmmaker acknowledged for unforgettable films Saudagar, Khalnayak and Pardes unveiled his memoir on November 15, at the Tata NCPA.
Mumbai. The HarperCollins, published book was launched by lyricist and filmmaker Gulzar. It hits shelves on November 24 and is Ghai’s attempt to inspire young and upcoming filmmakers. At the special event, a session was held between Subhash Ghai and Imtiaz Ali where he shared an account of his illustrious career and some interesting anecdotes.
The Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar had a falling out while shooting the 1959 film Paigham in which Dilip played the role of the younger brother of Raaj. Reportedly, in a particular scene, Raaj slapped Dilip so hard that the actor vowed never to work with him again.
Elaborating on how he managed to convince the two to work together in Saudagar, Ghai said that he started praising Raaj Kumar in front of Dilip Kumar, and when he met Raaj Kumar, he praised Dilip Kumar in front of him. His so called ‘fake praise’ brought them back together as friends.
Later, Subhash Ghai who worked with Dilip Kumar in films such as Vidhaata and Karma noted that the late superstar was like a ‘second mother’ who taught him several life lessons. “He was intelligent, clever, educated, and a true gentleman. What he learned from him is how to understand life and people deeply.
