Reportedly, AR Rahman has emerged as the highest-paid singer who changes Rs.3 crore per song. It’s not Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal or Sonu Nigam. Rahman has a staggering net worth of over Rs 1,700 Crore

It’s 2024 and (almost) every Bollywood movie soundtrack has an Arijit Singh number that goes on to dominate the music charts. This year alone, he’s delivered the chart-busting Sajni from Laapataa Ladies — India’s official entry for Oscars 2025 — and even rounded up a powerful protest anthem, Aar Kobe?, which garnered over 3.2 million YouTube views within a span of two short months.

Notwithstanding being one of the most prolific and profitable tickets to his concerts range up to lakhs artists in the country, Arijit Singh doesn’t hold the title of highest-paid singer in India. Neither does Shreya Ghoshal, who charges Rs 25 lakh for a song.

Shreya who dropped her haunting track Tumi Bondhu Aaj Shunbe, in collaboration with Shantanu Moitra and Arna Seal, recently, is the highest-paid female singer in India, with an impressive net worth of Rs 180–240 crore.

Sonu Nigam, whose personal wealth rounds up to an approximate Rs 350-400 crore, also doesn’t rank as the highest-paid singer in the country.

voice to. The reason for this exorbitant fee is to dissuade music producers from reaching out to him, because he prefers to focus on his own compositions that have earned him two Oscars back in 2009 in the ‘best song’ and ‘best original score’ categories.

Back then, he used to assist his father, RK Shekhar, a film score composer and conductor for Tamil and Malayalam films, at the studio. After he passed, a few years later, Rahman was tasked with the responsibility of providing for his family. He dropped out of school and embraced music as a full-time career, spending his initial days as a keyboard player and arranger for bands such as Roots, and later, composing scores for documentaries and jingles for advertisements and Indian TV channels.

In 1992, Rahman started Panchathan Record Inn, an ambitious recording and mixing studio in his backyard, and the following year, he bagged the National Film Award for Best Music Director. In the years since, the talented singer, composer and record producer, has gone on to deliver some of the best movie soundtracks across film industries — Bollywood, Hollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood and more. Notably, his first composition for a Hollywood film, Couples Retreat (2009), won the BMI London Award for Best Score.

The globally acclaimed singer has dedicated his career to changing the landscape of music, and he’s a far cry from shutting shop.

Besides invoicing
Rs 3 crore for a song, he also reportedly charges amid Rs 1 to 2 crore for a one-hour live performance and due to his extravagant fee and endorsements, Rahman has garnered a staggering net worth of Rs 1,728 crore.
