Asha Bhosle shares her collaboration with Kishore Kumar
Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar have collaborated on numerous evergreen tracks, including “Ek Main Aur Ek Tu,” “Pyar Ka Dard Hai,” and “Suniye Kahiye,” among others. Their journey kick-off with playful teasing and shared struggles before they rose to fame as legendary playback singers.
In a recent interview, Asha reminisced on her cherished moments with Kishore Kumar. He has always treated her like a younger sister.
In the interview Asha revealed that it was beginning of her career. Sharing her story, the singer said, “Kishore Da and she were too new when they sang songs for a film called Muqqadar. He was very quirky. Once we were singing a song which went like, ‘Ek, do, teen, chaar, baago mein aayi bahaar.’ In Marathi for Do, they say Don, so she sang it like that.
Ever since that, he named her Don and would always make fun of her by recalling that. She was very afraid of him because he would always tease her. He would gang up against her with the chorus singers. After a point, she started to give it back. He said, ‘Tu bhi pakki hai’ and they became friends.”
Bhosle also recalled the time when she along with Kumar was rejected by a recordist. She said, “Back then the mic used to be huge and they started the recording quite late. There was a recordist called Robin Chatterjee, and the music director loved us, he was Khemchand Prakash.
When they started to sing, Chatterjee said, ‘This won’t work. They don’t have good voice, call another artiste.’ We heard it and we left, and went to Mahalakshmi station. It was quite late and we were starving. We were not feeling good. We got some food and chai.”
She added, “Kishore da was upset, but she was positive. She did tell him that day that he will become a great artiste. A couple of years later, they went to record again and became known faces. Coincidently, the same recordist was present there too. When they went there, Kishore da looked at him and told her ‘Asha, villain is here.’ she didn’t care, but Kishore da said he will go speak to him. He said, ‘he won’t sing if he is the rcordist.’ Asha stopped him and said ‘Dada, this is not right, we should never snatch someone’s job.’ Kishore da reminded her of what he had done to us. She said, ‘The time was not right.’ But yet, Kishore da went and yelled at him. It is all destiny.”
Asha Bhosle then shared Kishore Kumar’s mood could be judged by his clothes. He said, “He was very naughty. He was all-in-one man. He was a filmmaker, music director, singer, writer, actor, everything. Its very hard to match his skills. Whenever he would come, she would judge his mood by his attire. If he wore a cap, with a white kurta and dhoti, it meant he was in a good mood. But if he came in a lungi and messy hair, she would avoid talking to him. Then he would come and tell me, ‘Asha maine jaani tere mann ki bhasha,’ and she would ignore. He treated her like his younger sister.
