Mumbai’s western suburb Borivali get its Inox Sky City Mall & IMAX Borivali in early March. As the name suggests, it is a part of Sky City Mall in Borivali East which will also open its doors to patrons soon.

No doubts. The popularity of the IMAX format is mushrooming on a fast track pace pace. Hence, the number of IMAX theatres is also escalating gradually jn the country.

Last year, South Mumbai residents got a pleasant surprise as an IMAX screen opened in the heritage Eros cinema building.
In 2024-end, the oldest IMAX theatre of Mumbai in Wadala restarted operations under Miraj. This year, residents staying on the opposite side of the city, in Borivali, are all set to get a similar treat.

The source shared more details, “The IMAX screen has a capacity of 228 seats and is hence slightly bigger than the IMAX at Cinepolis Nexus Seawoods, which is a 227-seater. There are a total of 10 screens in this multiplex. Apart from IMAX and normal screens, it also houses Insignia and MX4D auditoriums. The collective seating capacity across screens is 1372.”

When quizzed over itsb inauguration, the source replied, “The theatre is ready and a few permissions remain. Once that is in place, it’ll commence operations. The team plans to begin before the end of the financial year, that is, March 31, 2025.”

With Inox Sky City Mall, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will have 9 IMAX theatres, the other 8 being Miraj Wadala, PVR Icon Lower Parel, Inox Maison BKC, Inox R City Ghatkopar, Eros Inox Churchgate, Inox Megaplex Malad, Cinepolis Nexus Seawoods and Cinepolis Viviana Thane. Hence, Mumbai would now beat Delhi-NCR in having the highest IMAX screens in the country.

Borivali residents of have been eagerly waiting for the mall and cinema to be opened. The source reveals that the area doesn’t have a super-sized mall, with the nearest such shopping plaza, Growel’s 101, being nearly 3 km away.

Moreover, it is located at Devipada Metro Station. Commuters can exit the station and directly enter the mall. As a result, it’ll conveniently serve residents from other parts of Mumbai. The IMAX screen, meanwhile, will be one of its top attractions.”

In other news, the metropolitan region got one more multiplex on February 7 with Cinepolis Aurum in Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai. It consists of four screens. On the other hand, Inox Neelyog, located right outside Ghatkopar Station in the East, has shut shop and there are murmurs in the exhibition circles that it might be taken over by a different multiplex chain.
