Notably, the 1982 released film ‘Shakti was the directorial of Ramesh Sippy, the director who went on to make blockbuster hit Sholay a masterpiece.

Shakti released in 1982 was a landmark film that brought together two of Bollywood’s greatest legends—Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. It was a cinematic spectacle where the two powerhouse actors, belonging to different generations, shared the screen for the first and only time – Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.

While Dilip Kumar essayed the role of Commissioner Ashwini Kumar, a principled and duty-bound police officer, Amitabh Bachchan portrayed his son, Vijay, who grows up feeling neglected due to his father’s strict and uncompromising nature. This emotional father-son conflict, layered with intense drama, made Shakti one of the finest films in Indian cinema.

The film is especially remembered for its powerful face-offs between the two legends, where their contrasting acting styles—Dilip Kumar’s understated, methodical approach and Amitabh’s simmering intensity—created unforgettable moments. Their famous confrontation scenes, particularly the climax, remain etched in Bollywood history.

This film also won Dilip Kumar his eighth Filmfare Award for Best Actor, while Amitabh Bachchan’s restrained performance added another milestone to his illustrious career.

Shakti is often considered one of the finest father-son drama films in Indian cinema.
