Notwithstanding strained relationship amid the two countries,
A group of students from Government College University (GCU), Lahore, Pakistan, recreated the legendary Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya scene from the iconic Mughle-e-Azam. A short clip of the performance has captivated the internet.
The video, shared by Ajwa Ashfaq on Instagram, has earned admiration for its attention to detail by social media users.
The clip showcases the students reenacting the iconic moment where Anarkali, originally played by Madhubala, defies Emperor Akbar by declaring her love for Prince Salim through dance. The Dramatics Club of the university staged the scene amidst their annual play. It indeed brought the grandeur of the 1960s classic to life.
Social media users flooded the comments section of the post to express their admiration. A user went on to comment that this film is a masterpiece. Loved this. While another added, he gets goosebumps each time he watches this song. Social media users sent love from across the border as the clip celebrated the shared cultural legacy of Bollywood.
The love story of Salim and Anarkali remains one of the most celebrated tales in Indian cinema. Mughal-e-Azam, directed by K Asif, immortalised the forbidden romance, a story believed to have historical roots but largely romanticised over time.
Madhubala’s performance in Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya is one of the most memorable moments in Indian film history. The song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Naushad, was hot in Technicolor, standing out in a film otherwise in black and white. The grand production, intricate set design, and Madhubala’s expressive portrayal made the sequence legendary.
