When Aamir Khan took over “Lahore 1947” from Sunny Deol …

It”s learnt that Aamir Khan was the first person to taken up “Lahore 1947” from Sunny Deol since Sunny Deol couldn’t go ahead to film it owing to financial constraints.

At News18’s Rising Bharat Summit 2025, Sunny Deol revealed that he wanted to adapt the play into a film. But, due to financial constraints, he couldn’t go ahead.

The film, based on Asghar Wajahat’s renowned play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni.’ was to adapted by Sunny Deol to a film. Ironically, at that time around Sunny was reeling through financial constraints.

Sunny explained that Aamir Khan was the first person who evinced interest in producing the film, after which the project took off, as it was financially difficult to make.

When Gadar became a hit, they were really delighted, thinking someone might eventually make it. And Aamir was the first person who came forward and said, ‘Sunny, he wants to make this film.

Sunny Deol further added. They were waiting to do this film. As Raj and he had already made three films together, and after that, hadn’t worked on anything for years..People out there would love to see us together. That’s how this project started

Lahore: 1947 is based on Asghar Wajahat’s renowned play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni’. The story centers around a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore during the partition and is allocated a haveli abandoned by a departing Hindu family.

However, the narrative takes a poignant turn when they discover an old Hindu woman living in the haveli who refuses to leave.

Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi have worked together in films such as ‘Ghatak’, ‘Ghayal’, and ‘Damini’.
Lahore: 1947 marks their fourth collaboration.
