Born to a scriptwriter father and after schooling in California, she made her early exposure to Western culture and contributed to the boldness which she later brought to the silver screen.

After she was crowned Miss Asia Pacific in 1970, she forayed into films as an actress.

She got the first break in 1971 in Dev Anand’s directorial Hare Rama Hare Krishna in which she essayed the role as ⁹ modern, rebellious Janice, a role that established her as a youth icon and won for her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.
