Actor-singer Shruti Haasan, daughter of veteran actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, opens up on the humbling impact of her parents’ divorce, revealing how it transformed her perspective on life.
In her recent media interaction Shruti shared that the separation led to a drastic shift in her circumstances, taking her from a life of luxury to navigating Mumbai’s local trains. It wasn’t like moving from a mansion to another.
She revealed that she was very humbled by her parents’ separation. When they moved from Chennai to Mumbai, it wasn’t like we moved from a mansion to another mansion. It wasn’t really comfortable in Mumbai. But she feels glad these lessons happened. From travelling everywhere in a Mercedes to taking the local train was an abrupt changeover, and she realised how how they can learn from both these journey.
Kamal and Sarika’s divorce was finalised in 2004, and it marked a pivotal moment for Shruti and her younger sister, Akshara. Raised by Sarika in Mumbai post-separation, Shruti candidly admitted that her privileged upbringing initially fostered a sense of entitlement. However, the challenges following the split reshaped her attitude.
She thinks there was a fear inside her and even though she was projecting confidence, she was shaken to her core for many years,” adding that embracing humility brought her genuine confidence.
Shruti’s reflections highlight her journey from a sheltered childhood to embracing financial and personal independence. The actress, acknowledged for films like Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire and her upcoming role in Coolie alongside Rajinikanth, credits these experiences for grounding her. Her move to Mumbai, a stark contrast to her earlier life in Chennai, taught her to adapt and find value in simplicity.
