With no doubts whatsoever, the 1991 released Subhash Ghai directorial ‘Saudagar’
was a memorable Hindi drama which
brought together two legends, Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar, on screen after over three decades since release of Paigham in 1959.

The film introduced Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala, with Manisha later rising to fame as one of Bollywood’s top actresses.

With a strong supporting cast including Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Mukesh Khanna, Jackie Shroff, and others, Saudagar tells a powerful story of friendship turned rivalry, with love caught in between. The plot draws inspiration from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with Mandhaari’s character echoing Friar Laurence, and also takes cues from the 1985 Pakistani film Haq Mehar.

A massive hit, the film became the third highest grosser of 1991 and was among the biggest successes of the decade. It won two Filmfare Awards, including Best Director, and was Dilip Kumar’s last major box office hit, making it a film to remember.
