Boat capsizes off Puri beach – Providential escape for Gangulys

Former cricketer Sourav Ganguly’s elder brother Snehasish and wife Arpita had a providential escape after their speed boat overturned in Odisha’s Puri beach.

At the time of the incident, the couple was part of a group engaged in some water sports.
Video footage of the mishap shows some lifeguards on the beach struggling to rescue the tourists.

As per Arpita to the media, the sea was rough and boat operators allowed fewer people to board than its total capacity, making it light and causing it to tip over.
It had the capacity for 10 people but they allowed only 3-4 on board due to a greed for money. The boat was also the last one to go into the sea. The operator ensured Ganguly’s wife there would be no problem.
A high wave hit the boat, causing it to turn, Had they allowed more people on the boat, it wouldn’t have flipped. A lifeguard saved her. She never faced something like this before and she is still in trauma. She couldn’t see all through the night.

After she was brought ashore, she demanded to see the operators’ licence but they could not produce it…The Odisha government shouldn’t allow such operators as they endanger the life of tourists. The government should ban such things as the sea in Puri is very rough. Adding she intended to write to the Puri Superintendent of Police and the Odisha chief minister about the incident.

Official sources reveal that Ganguly couple has already informed the West Bengal administration about the incident. Meanwhile, sources in Puri’s police department reveal they were verifying the incident and could register a case.
Puri, a popular religious place in the country having the temple of Lord Jagannath, attracts lakhs of devotees every year, who also visit the beach in large numbers. According to a written reply submitted by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in the state assembly in March, Puri and other beaches in Odisha reported as many as 47 cases of drowning over the last five years.
