PM Modi inaugurates the Chenab Bridge in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on June 6. The highest railway arch bridge in the world is a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) stretch.

The engineering marvel, standing at 359 metres above the Chenab River, will connect New Delhi with Kashmir via Katra.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday 3 June shared the announcement of the Chenab Railway Bridge inauguration on X. He wrote, “History in the scripting.Just 3 days to go! The mighty Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, stands tall in Jammu and Kashmir. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL). Built to withstand nature’s toughest tests.”
It’s a proud symbol of New India’s strength and vision!”

About 1.31 km long, the height of the Chenab Bridge is 35 metres and touted to be more than that of the Eiffel Tower. The steel arch bridge was built in a collaboration between Ultra Construction, VSL India and Afcons Infrastructure. The project was executed by the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. The Chenab Bridge will not only facilitate train services between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district but also connect Katra and Banihal.

Earlier, the bridge was supposed to be inaugurated on April 19, but adverse weather caused a delay, and the date was postponed to June 6. Reflecting on the matter at that time, the Ministry of Railways issued a statement on X on April 16 wrote:
“Postponement news – due to adverse weather forecast inauguration program of USBRL is postponed for a few days. Next date will be informed when decided.”

Built on a budget of ₹ 1,486 crore, one of the salient features of the Chenab Bridge is that the steel used in the making is under extreme temperatures ranging from 40°C to -10°C. It can even withstand earthquakes and high-speed winds.
