DGCA passes orders for enhanced safety checks for AI Boeing Dreamliner planes
In the backdrop of the crash of the Air India Dreamliner bound for London’s Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad on 12 June in which 260 people lost their lives, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has passed orders for enhanced safety checks for Boeing Dreamliner planes operated by Air India.
As per announcement by Civil Aviation Ministry, all planes under the Boeing 787-8/9 fleet of Air India will undergo an enhanced safety inspection starting Sunday, June 15. The 787 Dreamliner and American aircraft manufacturer Boeing have come under scrutiny following the deadly Air India Ahmedabad-London flight crash that killed all except one on board.
Fuel, engine and hydraulic systems monitoring are among the advanced checks ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which will seek a report of the checks for review.
The Air India Boeing Dreamliner planes with GenX engines will undergo safety checks. Here’s what the order stated:
*Inspection of fuel parameter monitoring and associated system checks.
*Inspection of cabin air compressor and associated systems.
*Electronic engine control system test.
*Engine fuel-driven actuator-operational test and oil system check.
*Serviceability check of hydraulic system.
*Review of take-off parameters.
*Besides, power assurance checks will be carried out within two weeks, and a ‘Flight Control Inspection’ will be introduced.
*Repetitive snags on the Boeing Dreamliner flights during the last 15 days have to be reviewed at the earliest. *Maintenance actions have to be closed upon the review, the government said.
The crash marked the first fatal accident involving a 787 since its commercial debut in 2011.
Reportedly, in 2024, a Boeing engineer had raised serious concerns over the structural integrity of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. However, there is no evidence linking the concerns raised by the official to the recent Air India plane crash.
According to Boeing Airplanes, in its statement on the Air India crash, it was “in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171”, adding it stood “ready to support them.
