Perpetrator of Foreign interference
Report by Canadian intelligence agency has labelled India as ‘perpetrator of foreign interference’. Ironically, this comes hours following PM Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney signalling a huge diplomatic reset in the midst of G-7 summit
This also comes PM Modi and Mark Carney and Carney met in Alberta and pledged to improve bilateral ties.
Amidst what’s both governments characterised as constructive talks, the two leaders agreed to restore the top diplomats withdrawn in 2023 amid heightened tensions.
However, the Reuters report added that Carney’s invitation to Modi drew criticism from segments of Canada’s Sikh
Tensions first escalated when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused India in 2023 of being involved in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh terrorist, in British Columbia.
India firmly denied any role in the killing and instead accused Canada of harboring Sikh separatist groups.
Reuters further said that the newly released Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) report highlights that “transnational repression is central to India’s actions in Canada, although it continues to view China as the primary counter-intelligence threat.”
The report also identifies Russia, Iran, and Pakistan as countries of concern, the Reuters.
In October, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police revealed that they had shared over a dozen threats made against Sikh activists advocating for a separate Khalistan state in India.
The CSIS report states that Indian government officials, along with local proxies, have carried out various efforts aimed at influencing Canadian political figures and communities. These efforts are described as attempts to align Canada’s policies more closely with India’s interests, particularly in relation to its stance on pro-Khalistan groups operating within
