As the historic film ‘Sholay’ approaches its 50th anniversary next week, the Film Heritage Foundation has restored this iconic classic in stunning 4K.
In a bid to celebrate the golden jubilee of one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated movies, the restored version will premiere at a special gala screening amidst the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, 2025.
The Film Heritage Foundation has announced the North American premiere on social media with the caption reading read, “Indian cinematic epic ‘Sholay’ (1975), directed by Ramesh Sippy, celebrates 50 years with the North American Premiere of the restored version at the 50th edition of the TIFF Toronto International Film Festival! This special screening takes place on September 6, 2025, at a gala event at the 1800-seater Roy Thomson Hall befitting the legendary status of the film.”
Collaborating with Sippy Films Pvt. Ltd, the producers of ‘Sholay’, the Foundation has meticulously restored the film in 4K quality, making sure this timeless classic shines for a new generation of audiences.
‘Sholay’, often described as a ‘curry western’ inspired by Hollywood cowboy films, featured a star-studded cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Jaya Bachchan, and Hema Malini.
The film when released in 1975, shattered box office records to emerge as the highest-grossing Indian film of its time. Although surpassed in earnings a decade later, ‘Sholay’ remains the most-watched Indian film ever, with over 25 crore viewers worldwide.
