Red alert in Mumbai heavy downpour causes waterlogging
IMD Mumbai issued a warning of intense rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) in parts of north and central Maharashtra, including Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Aurangabad region, Beed, and Nanded.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai on Saturday (August 16, 2025) as the city grapples with waterlogging in several areas.
Amid August 15 and 16, 2025, Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall with average totals of 99.61 mm in the City (CT), 142.80 mm in the Eastern Suburbs (ES), and 144.57 mm in the Western Suburbs (WS).
In view of this the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to avoid stepping out unless necessary. Overnight showers have led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the city, including the Milan Subway, Kurla, Chembur, Gandhi Market, and Andheri.
According to IMD, both Raigad and Mumbai are ‘very likely’ to recieve an intense spell of rain on August 16 Saturday. Thane Ratnagiri, Palghar, Thane to recieve heavy rainfall in isolated areas on August 16.

Western and Eastern Suburbs record over 200 mm rain in just 3 hours
Between 1:00 am and 4:00 am on August 16, 2025, Mumbai witnessed extremely heavy rainfall, with the Western and Eastern Suburbs hit the hardest. Marol Fire Station (207 mm) and Nariyalwadi School, Santacruz (202 mm) recieve an intense spell of rain in the west, while Tagore Nagar School, Vikhroli (196 mm) and BP Office, Vikhroli (195 mm) led the east.
In the midst of the relentless downpour, a landslip struck Jankalyan Society in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli Park Site (West Mumbai), claiming two lives.
According to Dr Nikhil, AMO, Rajawadi Hospital, four injured were reported, out of which two were brought dead, and the condition of two people remains stable.
