Notwithstanding her retirement from the entertainment world of she continued performing Bharatnatyam. Her latest one was perhaps in Ayodhya in January 2024. Her flexibility even at the age of 90+ is really incredible and commendable too.
She learned Bharatnatyam as well as Carnatic music and was groomed mainly by her maternal grandmother, Yadugiri Devi, a disciplined lady. She later designed costumes for Vyjayantimala in a few of her films. Like her mother, Vyjayantimala also joined the Tamil film industry when she was a teenager. The film Vazhkai released in 1949, remade in Telugu in 1950 where Vyjayantimala reprised her role. Both the films were produced by AVM. Witnessing the success of these films, AVM thought of launching her in Hindi films. Bahar (1951) was her debut in Hindi films, which was a remake of her Vazhkai (1949). The film turned popular.
