PPL slaps lawsuit on Bigg Boss 19 makers over song usage
Pornographic Performance Limited (PPL) has slapped a legal notice to Endemol Shine India, makers of Bigg Boss. The dispute purports to the use of songs Chikni Chameli from the film Agneepath and Dhat Tere Ki from Gori Tere Pyaar Mein in Bigg Boss 19 Episode 11 sans preceding consent. Sony Music India, which owns the rights to these tracks, is represented by PPL in the notice.
The organisation is requisitioning Rs 2 crore (around Rs 20 million) as damages and licensing fees from the show’s makers. They have also alleged that the producers, Endemol Shine India, used the music recordings without obtaining the required public performance license.
The use of these songs sans licensing is counted as a deliberate violation of copyright rules. PPL is demanding compensation for financial losses and unpaid licensing fees.
Meanwhile, It isn’t clear whether the parties will settle the issue out of court in the coming days.
Some reports indicate that Endemol Shine India may not be directly liable, as the song selection reportedly falls under Jio Hotstar’s promo team. The notice raises questions about whether Jio Hotstar will respond and take responsibility for the legal dispute.
Reports, however, reveal that the legal notice was served on 19 September, and the makers of Bigg Boss 19 have yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
